Challenges

An attempt to keep track of challenges I’m participating in. My half-hearted list of 1001 books read is here and the Nordic challenge has also earned its own page, but below are the rest.

Jorden rundt på 8 bøker (Around the  world in 8 books)

A challenge run by Lyran, involving reading books from various parts of the world. I joined round 2 in spring 2010 and read a couple of books, but fell off, partly because the books I purchased for the challenge somehow got packed in the big house move project. Now Lyran is on round 3, and I joined in late for South America but am trying to get through all three books from Africa. All posts related to this challenge are tagged Jorden rundt på 8 bøker.

Books read:

Books purchased, but not yet read:

  • Aké - Wole Soyinka
  • Beneath the Lion’s Gaze – Maaza Mengiste

Strindberg

Ord och inga visor challenges us to read Strindberg this year, as it’s one hundred years since he died and this is being… well, celebrated hardly seems the correct term, but… taken notice of in Sweden (and internationally, for all I know). I’ve read Fröken Julie and Et drömspel, definitely, possibly more. My regard for Strindberg’s writing is horribly mixed up with my, uhm, dislike of the teacher we read Strindberg with (I was 18ish), who insisted we analyse EVRYTHING we read from the biographical perspective, with a heavy leaning towards Freudian interpretations. It got a bit old very, very quickly, and we kept at this for TWO whole years. Sheeesh. Anyway, we read a lot of really good books, but I have mixed feelings for most of them. I think it’s time I gave Strindberg another chance, and although he is hardly contemporary, he fits into my Nordic challenge, too (I bet there will be SOME attention given to him at Bokmässan). We’ll see how it goes.
